North Walsham is a town shaped by its history and community spirit. Originally an Anglo-Saxon settlement, it became prosperous during the medieval wool trade and remains defined by its historic buildings and landmarks.

At the centre of the town stands the iconic ruined tower of St Nicholas Church, one of North Norfolk’s most recognisable features and a lasting symbol of North Walsham’s heritage. The town also played a significant role in the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, and event of national importance still commemorated locally today.

North Walsham is also proud of its educational heritage. Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson attended school here at Paston Grammar School (now Paston College), reinforcing the town’s long association with national history.

The Town Council actively supports and promotes local heritage through partnership working with organisations such as the North Walsham Heritage Centre and community history groups.
